Is there room for one more hot-hatch in today’s car scene? Hell’s yeah! The Chevrolet Cruze does not come up often in compact car conversations anymore, to be honest. Last year, the arrival of the 1.6-litre ECOTECH turbo diesel engine did spark our imagination, if for a moment, until we priced one.
Not since the Cobalt SS, from nearly nine years ago, has there been much to report on where Chevy’s compact car is concerned. That was, until now.
The Chevrolet Cruze Sport6 SS concept, revealed at the Sao Paulo motor show in Brazil just recently, ticks all the right boxes, both physically, and emotionally.
The hatchback sits low and squat on a set of 20-inch black alloy wheels which purposefully match the unique blacked out grille, aggressive black front and rear aero as well as the side skirts.
Sitting below the bonnet is GM’s turbocharged 1.4-litre engine which has been tuned to produce 295-horsepower. The performance potential is huge here, as is the styling exercise.
Chevrolet says the Cruze Sport6 SS concept is nothing more than a test to see how we all feel about their little creation. We think they’re teasing us with something that could easily be built and take some luster away from the Honda Civic Type R, VW Golf R, Subaru WRX STI and the Ford Focus RS, if only for a short while.
Just do it Chevy!
