VinFast Confirms the Tiny VF3 Electric Crossover will be Sold in North America

The VinFast VF3 will be sold in North America, possibly as soon as the end of the year.

  • This upcoming model is significantly smaller than the current Chevrolet Bolt.

  • This model should have around 125 miles of range.

  • Deliveries could start later this year in the United States, where the starting price could be under $20,000.

The Vietnamese automaker VinFast has just announced another new model that will make it to the North American market: the VF3.

While the company still only offers the VF8 in the United States and Canada, it has already unveiled the larger VF9 and the smaller VF6 and VF7.

Now, a fourth upcoming model joins the brand’s future lineup, in the form of a tiny sub-compact crossover which could become the smallest and most affordable highway-capable electric vehicle in North America.

Indeed, the dimensions announced by VinFast for the VF3 show it to be significantly smaller than the current Chevrolet Bolt EV, and the targeted U.S. starting price is said to be below $20,000.

For this price, buyers should expect to get a funky-looking small vehicle that will offer a range of about 125 miles (200 kilometres).

While this may not sound like much, it is worth remembering that any other electric vehicle on the market costs thousands more than the VF3 is expected to go for.

Of course, such a low price means the VF3 will be fairly basic, but the automaker says a 10-inch infotainment screen will be included, and so will Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In terms of practicality, the VinFast VF3 will reportedly offer up to 550 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded down, which is a little more than you get in most sub-compact hatchbacks with the rear seats up.

Given this information and the fact that VinFast hasn’t disclosed how much cargo the VF3 will be able to take with its rear seats in place, we expect that folding a rear seat will be pretty much mandatory when loading up the trunk.

Nevertheless, the VF3 could be an important asset for the young brand, since the ever-increasing prices of EVs and cars in general have left an empty spot in the market for truly affordable electric models.

In order to really become successful, however, VinFast will have to correct some of the shortcomings that have surfaced since the introduction of the VF8, including a service network which is still too small to support the targeted sales.

More information about the VinFast VF3 should be available in the coming months, as deliveries are scheduled to start in Vietnam during the third quarter and the U.S. should follow soon after.
