Volkswagen ID. Buzz Return Delayed Until 2028 Model Year

  • Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz will skip the 2026 and 2027 model years in the United States.

  • The 2028 model is scheduled to reach American dealers during the first half of 2027.

  • Planned upgrades include revised software, vehicle-to-load functionality, a digital key and physical steering-wheel controls.

Volkswagen has once more postponed the return of the ID. Buzz, extending an already unusual interruption for a vehicle that entered North American showrooms less than two years ago.

The automaker informed U.S. dealers on September 24 that the model is now scheduled to reappear during the first half of 2027 as a 2028 model. It had previously been expected to return this fall for the 2027 model year. We’ve reached out to VW Canada for confirmation, and the Buzz will return; however, it will be a 2028 model-year vehicle.

U.S. Dealers Warn ID. Buzz May Be Gone as VW Cancels 2026 Model

The revised schedule means the ID. Buzz will miss both the 2026 and 2027 model years in the United States, and likely Canada. Volkswagen launched the North American version in November 2024 after a lengthy and surely expensive promotional campaign built around the company’s historic Type 2 van.

This is the second significant adjustment to the product schedule. Volkswagen told dealers in December 2025 that the ID. Buzz would skip the 2026 model year. The company subsequently announced a revised 2027 lineup in May, but those plans have now been carried forward to 2028.

Previously announced product changes remain in development. VW plans to introduce a Tourer trim destined for camping and lifestyle fans. Additionally, it will offer two-tone colour combinations and physical controls on the steering wheel.

Volkswagen Teases Updates to the ID.Buzz and a new Atlas Cross Sport for 2027

The updated Buzz is expected to be fitted with North American Charging Standard compatibility, although Volkswagen has not clarified whether this will involve a native NACS port or an adapter. Other planned additions include revised software, vehicle-to-load capability and a digital key.

“The 2028 ID Buzz brings together meaningful customer-focused enhancements in a single launch,” Volkswagen said in a statement accompanying the dealer notification.

The company did not identify the reason for the latest postponement or provide pricing details for the updated model. Demand will remain an important consideration – It’s no secret that it’s been quite poor . Volkswagen sold 6,140 examples in the United States during 2025, followed by 2,481 units in the first six months of 2026. As best as we can find, between 700 and 800 have found owners in Canada since its arrival in late 2024. These volumes are exceedingly modest relative to the attention surrounding the van’s launch.

The ID. Buzz arrived with limited configurations, comparatively modest driving range and a high price tag, restricting its potential audience. In the U.S., its position has become more difficult following the end of the U.S. federal EV tax credit. Import tariffs may also influence Volkswagen’s product and pricing decisions.

Volkswagen nevertheless continues to describe the ID. Buzz as an active part of its U.S. product plan. Dealers must now wait until mid-2027 for the upgraded van and for further information regarding configurations, range and pricing.
