Volkswagen to Replace the Polo with the ID.2 in Europe

  • This model will slot below the current ID.3 in terms of size and price.

  • Its design could be reminiscent of the MK4 Golf sold at the turn of the millennium.

  • Plans for an even smaller and cheaper ID.1 have reportedly been scrapped.

Volkswagen is working on future electric vehicles to add to its lineup of ID. models and the next one to arrive in Europe is likely to be the ID.2.

Slotting below the current ID.3 in the lineup, this model will replace the Polo, which is itself the next smallest hatchback to the Golf in terms of gasoline-powered models.

According to Auto Zeitung, this model will be offered in a five-door configuration with a front-wheel drive single motor drivetrain that should allow it a limited top speed of 160 km/h.

Battery sizes between 50 and 80 kW could be used in order to provide a targeted range of 400 kilometres (WLTP).

The ID.2 should also be 4.03 meters long, 1.78 meters wide, and 1.52 meters high, which would give it similar dimensions to the current Kia Rio.

Despite its small exterior size, the ID.2 is expected to have as much interior space as the current Golf and up to 100 litres more cargo space.

This comparison with the larger Golf could be quite apt since sources say the ID.2 could take its design inspiration from the old Golf MK4 which was sold at the turn of the millennium.

With a planned starting price of 25,000 euros, this model will be about 5,000 euros more expensive than the Polo it replaces but close to 20,000 euros cheaper than the ID.3, the next closest electric vehicle in the European VW lineup.

This low entry price for an EV might have been the reason why the even smaller and more affordable ID.1 seems to have been cancelled recently. Indeed, VW could have felt there wasn’t a need for two compact electric hatchbacks priced between 20,000 and 30,000 euros.

As with most Volkswagen models, derivatives of the ID.2 will also be sold under the Skoda and Cupra brands. The VW itself could also receive a sportier GTX variant in order to compete directly with the upcoming Renault 5e and its Alpine version.

Since neither the larger ID.3 or the current Polo have ever been offered in North America, it is very unlikely that the ID.2 will make its way to our market after its 2025 launch in Germany.
