Volkswagen will unveil a new electric crossover concept on Sunday, September 7, ahead of its public debut at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich. The as-yet-unnamed model is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the ID.4, with a focus on the European B-segment.
The crossover is closely related to the ID.2all, a five-door hatchback first revealed in 2023. While the hatchback is targeted to launch at a €25,000 ($40,000 CDN) base price in Europe, the new SUV-styled variant is expected to carry a modest premium while remaining well below the ID.4’s €40,000+ starting price in Germany (base price in Canada is just under $49,000).
Built on a front-wheel-drive version of Volkswagen’s MEB platform, the upcoming EV is designed to serve as a compact, city-friendly crossover. It is expected to have a footprint similar to the T-Cross, but with improved cabin space due to its dedicated EV architecture. The ID.2all measured 4,050 mm in length with a 2,600 mm wheelbase.
Design elements previewed in the teaser sketch include a boxy silhouette, oversized wheels, light bars at both ends, and an illuminated VW badge at the rear. From the front, the concept has a striking resemblance to the Land Rover Discovery, which we suppose is a compliment. We expect the final product to feature black wheel arches and, more than likely, door handles.
The crossover should be powered by the same 222-horsepower front-mounted motor as the ID.2all, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration time under seven seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h. Volkswagen has not confirmed whether this model will offer all-wheel drive, though such a configuration is not expected in this segment due to cost and demand factors. Some markets, such as North America, will demand this vehicle if it crosses the Pond.
This new model is part of Volkswagen’s plan to expand its lower-cost EV offerings in Europe, at the very least. The ID.2 and its crossover spinoff will be followed by the ID.1 in 2026, which will target a €20,000 ($32,000 CDN) price point. The ID.1 is expected to succeed the discontinued e-up! as Volkswagen’s most affordable electric vehicle – the one that won’t be coming here.
