Volvo Begins Production of Fully Electric EX90 SUV

Volvo's Charleston plant rolls out the first fully electric EX90 SUV, featuring advanced safety and computing technology.

Volvo Cars has commenced production of its all-new fully electric EX90 SUV at the company’s manufacturing facility near Charleston, South Carolina. The first units are slated for delivery to customers in the latter half of this year.

The initial EX90 to emerge from the Charleston assembly line is painted in Denim Blue and will be delivered to a customer in the United States. Volvo Cars’ CEO, Jim Rowan, emphasized the vehicle’s importance, highlighting its role in promoting safety, sustainability, and advanced technology.

The Charleston plant, which began operations in 2018, now produces both the EX90 and the S60 sedan. The facility has undergone substantial upgrades, including enhancements to its body and paint shops and the addition of a cutting-edge battery pack production line. With these upgrades, the plant is expected to produce up to 150,000 vehicles annually.

The EX90, built on Volvo’s next-generation electric vehicle platform, offers a fully electric range of up to 480 km. It is designed to be the safest Volvo vehicle to date, featuring state-of-the-art passive and active safety technologies supported by an array of sensors.

Reflecting Scandinavian design principles, the EX90 combines modern aesthetics with functionality, efficiency, and safety. It offers a true seven-seater configuration, making it an ideal family vehicle with ample space, versatility, and comfort.

Equipped with a robust core system, the EX90 remains constantly connected and can receive updates over time through software improvements. These updates are facilitated by Volvo’s software engineers, utilizing AI and real-time data collection to enhance the vehicle’s capabilities continually.

The EX90 is part of Volvo’s rapidly expanding portfolio of fully electric vehicles and introduces a significant technological advancement for the brand. It is the first Volvo vehicle to integrate core computing technology, dedicated to advancing automotive safety.
