The sedan will be fully electric.
It will be based on the same platform as the EX90’s.
During the presentation of the new and improved infotainment system for the Volvo XC90, the Swedish manufacturer highlighted the popular YouTube application which, once opened, played a short video of a future electric model expected soon: the brand’s new flagship sedan, the Volvo ES90.

Of course, the video’s enticing nature doesn’t tell us much about the design of this large electric sedan, although the silhouette shown at the end is reminiscent of the current S90 sedan. We can guess that Volvo will be banking mainly on the elongated variant of the car, this type of configuration being very popular in China. And since Volvo is supported by Geely, the longer ES90 is a logical choice for the brand.
And as this ES90 will be 100% electric, it’s likely to appeal to Chinese consumers. The video description also announces a March 2025 unveiling date, suggesting a 2026 model year for global commercialization. We’ll see if North America is in the plans, but since there’s still a market for full-size sedans here, the arrival of this ES90 is, barring a last-minute reversal, inevitable.
What is clearer, especially since the presentation of the larger EX90, is the reuse of the SPA2 platform that serves as the skeleton for the utility model. The ES90 sedan will therefore benefit from this specific architecture.
In theory, the powertrain of the Volvo ES90 could also be similar or identical to that of the Volvo EX90, meaning a 111-kWh battery with power figures estimated at 275, 402 and 510 hp, depending on the number of engines on board.
We can also guess that the sedan, more aerodynamic than its high-roof counterpart, will be capable of driving longer distances. We’ll know more towards the end of winter 2025.
