Volvo is preparing to refresh its EV lineup with the introduction of the EX50, a compact crossover expected to become the brand’s entry-level battery-electric model in the U.S., and joining the EX30 in Canada in late 2027. The vehicle is expected to replace the EX40.
The EX50 is expected to arrive with pricing in the high US$40,000 range, positioning it below the recently introduced EX60 while offering larger dimensions than the outgoing EX40. The current EX40 retails for over $56,000 in the U.S., and $63,000 in Canada. The EX30 starts at CDN$48,000. An approximate US$48,000 price for the EX50 would translate to roughly CDN$67,000.

The EX50 is expected to compete directly with high-volume electric SUVs including the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Toyota bZ, while also targeting premium rivals such as the Cadillac Optiq, BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz electric GLC and GLA models.
Production is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 at Volvo’s new €1.2 billion (approximately CDN$1.9-billion) manufacturing facility in Kosice, Slovakia. The plant will have annual capacity for up to 250,000 vehicles and will also build the future Polestar 7. Volvo is reportedly targeting up to 10,000 U.S. deliveries during the EX50’s first full year, although production allocation could be adjusted depending on European demand.
The Volvo EX30 Is Dead in the United States, But Not in Canada
The EX50 will ride on Volvo’s SPA3 platform, replacing the aging CMA architecture used by the EX40. The new software-defined vehicle architecture supports an 800-volt electrical system to improve charging speeds, increase energy efficiency and provide greater flexibility for battery and motor configurations. Volvo has also indicated that hard lessons learned from the launch of the EX90 helped shape the development of SPA3, emphasizing improved software integration and vehicle functionality.
Beyond the technology upgrades, the EX50 is expected to deliver improved interior packaging and lower production costs while offering proportions that more closely match customer expectations in the compact crossover segment.
