Volkswagen of America has issued two stop-sale orders on its ID. Buzz electric minivan due to unrelated safety recalls affecting 5,637 US vehicles built between September 2024 and February 2025 at the Hanover, Germany plant. The recalls involve issues with the third-row bench seat width and an incorrect brake system warning light, both making the vehicle non-compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The first recall addresses a third-row bench seat that is too wide for just two passengers despite having only two seatbelts, according to information from Automotive News. To remedy this issue, dealers will install unpadded trim parts to limit the width of the seat, effectively making it physically sized for its intended two-passenger capacity.
The second recall focuses on the brake system warning light displaying an incorrect symbol and colour—showing an amber icon instead of the required red “brake” text mandated by safety regulations. This discrepancy could potentially create confusion for drivers when a brake system malfunction occurs.
While Volkswagen has not confirmed whether the seat width recall affects Canadian vehicles, Transport Canada has already issued a recall notice for the brake warning light issue. According to Transport Canada Recall #2025-191, issued on April 9, 2025, 771 ID. Buzz vehicles in Canada are affected by the brake system malfunction tell-tale being the wrong colour.
The Canadian regulatory body states that “a tell-tale that’s the wrong colour could create confusion and increase the risk of a crash,” confirming non-compliance with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 101 (Location and Identification of Controls and Displays) and 135 (Light Vehicle Brake Systems).
Volkswagen plans to notify Canadian owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicles to a dealership for a software update to correct the display issue.
Volkswagen of America has established separate timelines for addressing each safety concern. For the instrument panel issue, the company will provide software updates with owner notifications expected by June 6. The seating issue remedies, which require physical modifications to the third-row bench, will follow with owner notifications scheduled by June 20.
The stop-sale affects both new and pre-owned inventory, coming just months after the vehicle’s North American launch. With a starting price of $77,495 CAD, the ID. Buzz is Volkswagen’s most expensive model in the North American market.
This marks the second recent stop-sale for Volkswagen’s electric vehicle lineup, following a previous action on the electric ID.4 compact crossover over faulty door handles in fall 2024. Volkswagen Canada has not yet confirmed whether the third-row seat recall will affect Canadian vehicles.
