Toyota and Lexus Expand Engine Recall to Include 13,000 Additional Vehicles in Canada

A previous recall and changes in manufacturing processes hasn't fixed an issue that can cause Toyota and Lexus twin-turbo 3.4L V6 engines to fail prematurely.

  • A recall for Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX models equipped with a twin-turbo 3.4L V6 engine was initiated last year.

  • Additional units of both, as well as the Lexus GX550, have been added to the recall list.

  • Machining debris could have been left in the engine during manufacture, potentially causing early failures.

Toyota and Lexus are expanding a previous recall to include 13,000 additional vehicles in Canada relating to possible failures of the 3.4L twin-turbo V6 engine.

Initially launched in May of 2024, the first recall affected the 2022 model year of the Lexus LX 600 as well as the 2022 and 2023 models of the Toyota Tundra.

An investigation found that the engine in these vehicles could have been manufactured with improper processes that may have allowed machining debris to remain inside the engine block, which could then cause internal damage to the main bearings and the crankshaft during normal use.

Such damage can cause a sudden engine failure while the vehicle is on the road, potentially increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.

The initial population included 9,979 vehicles in Canada and 102,092 in the United States, which received new engines as part of the recall.

Toyota wasn’t able to estimate what percentage of the recalled vehicles actually presented the problem, so it is difficult to get an idea of the scale of the issue.

The automaker said that new manufacturing processes had been put in place for vehicles manufactured after February 13th, 2023 for the Tundra and November 25th, 2022 for the Lexus LX.

It seems this wasn’t sufficient to fix the problem, however, since the company has had to expand the recall to cover the 2023 and 2024 Tundra and Lexus LX, as well as the 2024 Lexus GX 550.

In Canada, this amounts to 13,164 additional vehicles, and in the United States, the number of newly recalled trucks and SUVs reaches close to 127,000.

In documents filed with Transport Canada, machining debris is still held culpable for premature failures of the twin-turbo 3.4L V6 in these models.

No new fix has been announced at the moment, but it is likely that all of these vehicles will be eligible for a new engine yet again. We will have to wait until the automaker announces an official fix to know for certain.

Until then, Toyota and Lexus will communicate with owners via mail or email at the start of next year to advise them on the steps to take to have their vehicle repaired.

This latest generation of turbocharged V6 powertrains from Toyota has had a rocky start since its introduction a few years ago, which might be one motivation for the company to work on an entirely new design for a hybrid V8 engine that could make its way under the hood of its trucks and SUVs later in the decade.
