2026 Nissan Armada NISMO Test Drive: Thank You, Dubai

The Armada NISMO owes its existence in large part to the excesses of off-road enthusiasts in the deserts of the Middle East. Better known as the Patrol in that part of the world, it has practically become a social statement. You see them everywhere. And in a region where excess is almost expected, it somehow makes perfect sense to create a street-performance version of a body-on-frame SUV.

For:

  • Distinctive design that stays true to NISMO
  • Strong engine performance
  • Reasonable price

Against:

  • High urban fuel consumption
  • Steering feels disconnected from the rest of the vehicle
  • Disappointing braking performance

NISMO All the Way

One look at the Armada NISMO is enough to understand what it is and what it is trying to accomplish: deliver more performance while attracting plenty of attention. NISMO certainly did not hold back when it came to styling. The front end now features a massive gloss-black grille framed by the signature red accents associated with Nissan’s performance division. A NISMO badge sits prominently in the centre, just in case there was any doubt.

Unsurprisingly, the front bumper has also been redesigned and incorporates attractive smoked metallic accents. The red lower body trim that wraps around the vehicle sits particularly low, giving the Armada a genuine ground-effect appearance. There is a small compromise as a result, with maximum ground clearance dropping to 8.9 inches compared with 9.9 inches on some other versions.

Along the sides, these skirts also serve as running boards, and the integration is nicely executed. For me, however, one of the highlights of the NISMO treatment is the set of 22-inch RAYS wheels. RAYS is the same company associated with the wheels used on the Nissan Z and the now-discontinued GT-R.

The rear is equally massive and carries over the visual theme established at the front. A removable panel in the centre of the diffuser provides access to the trailer hitch. After all, this bad boy retains an 8,500-lb towing capacity. Nissan essentially offers the Armada NISMO in three colours: NISMO Stealth Grey, Super Black and Everest White.

A Cabin That Fully Embraces Its Sporty Character

Inside, NISMO once again makes its intentions obvious. Every Armada NISMO comes with a generous amount of red suede-like material that immediately sets the tone, and I love it. The seats, dashboard and doors are partially covered in this material, reinforcing the performance-oriented atmosphere.

Nissan even adds a red 12 o’clock marker to the steering wheel so the “driver” can easily identify its position. Additional red accents frame the dashboard. As in every Armada, there is also plenty of gloss-black trim. Personally, I think aluminum inserts would have been a better match for the NISMO’s character.

The seats impress with both their comfort and their extensive range of adjustments, 12 in total, including lumbar support that can really wrap around your lower back. Space is obviously generous.

Since the 2025 redesign, the Armada has made a significant leap forward in terms of technology. Two connected screens form one large display panel housing the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Overall ergonomics are very good, largely because Nissan has retained a generous number of physical controls on the centre console.

The rotary selector for the numerous drive modes is also located there. I still question the placement of the semi-autonomous driving activation button, which sits on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. It simply does not make much sense.

Life aboard the Armada is quite pleasant, especially with the 12-speaker Klipsch surround-sound system delivering a total of 600 watts. In the second row, the NISMO features two captain’s chairs. Access is generous, although the equipment level is somewhat limited considering the segment.

Third-row accommodations are decent, but several competitors offer better comfort. Cargo capacity is also well below the segment average, ranging from 578 to 2,750 litres depending on the seating configuration.

More Than Just Looks

At the heart of the beast is a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6, the VR35DDTT, with output increased to 460 horsepower, 35 more than in the other Armada models. Torque remains unchanged at 516 lb-ft.

At this level of performance, I would say the additional horsepower is not particularly noticeable in everyday driving. Still, you can tell that the NISMO has genuinely spent some time in the hands of performance engineers.

The nine-speed automatic transmission generally works well, although at lower speeds it is not uncommon to notice some hesitation and occasional jolts.

The suspension receives a more aggressive calibration depending on the selected drive mode, particularly in Sport and Sport+. The dampers are tuned differently to provide greater firmness and a more dynamic character, particularly through corners. In the other settings, the Armada returns to the familiar softness expected from a large body-on-frame SUV.

NISMO has also paid attention to the steering. While it is slightly more precise, it remains relatively numb and disconnected from the road. Then again, that is hardly unusual in this segment.

What disappointed me most was the braking performance. Despite the presence of red brake calipers, I expected considerably more bite from a vehicle wearing the NISMO badge. The engineers did not make significant changes to the braking system, and it shows.

On the road, the Armada remains one of the more enjoyable large SUVs to drive. Despite all that power, it is possible to achieve surprisingly reasonable fuel consumption, which is one of the advantages of using a V6 rather than a V8.

At the end of a nearly 2,000-kilometre trip, I averaged 11.5 L/100 km. More than 1,300 kilometres of that distance were covered on the highway, along with some towing. It is worth noting that the engine requires 91-octane premium fuel.

Despite its street-oriented appearance, the Armada remains extremely capable off-road. Its four-wheel-drive system is effective and has proven itself for years in deserts around the world.

There is a reason the Patrol, which is essentially the Armada as we know it in North America, is such a common sight on dune expeditions throughout the Middle East. Its reputation in that environment was built over decades, and the NISMO does not abandon those capabilities simply because it wears 22-inch wheels and red accents.

What to Watch For

This powertrain has been around for several years, but it has only been offered in the Armada since 2025, meaning there is still relatively little long-term reliability data available specifically for this application.

Given the limited sample size, engine reliability appears to be good so far. What we have seen are occasional reports involving screen malfunctions. Beyond that, the Armada remains a proven body-on-frame SUV that does not appear to be any more problematic than its main competitors.

Conclusion

A legend in the Middle East, the Armada NISMO is finally available in Canada. With a starting price of $108,666, it is competitively positioned against its main rivals.

More importantly, the NISMO fully embraces the sporty character Nissan is trying to give the Armada. There is nothing particularly subtle about it, and that is part of its appeal. The distinctive styling, RAYS wheels, red interior accents and additional power give it a personality that is difficult to confuse with another version.

In my view, that exclusivity works in the Armada’s favour. It attracts attention and allows the NISMO to stand apart in a segment where many large SUVs follow a very similar formula.

At the same time, it retains the Armada’s 8,500-lb towing capacity and serious four-wheel-drive capability, even if the sportier treatment comes with a small sacrifice in ground clearance. The result is an Armada that looks and feels genuinely different without giving up the capabilities that made the Patrol famous in the first place.
