The Cybertruck was first announced two years and two months ago.
This latest change represents the third time the truck’s production date has been pushed back.
For the last few days, the Tesla Cybertruck order page where potential buyers can put a $100 deposit no longer mentions a timeline. There is a number of factors that could explain this.
Now, the only indication is that, as an order holder, “You will be able to complete your configuration as production nears” as brought up by The Drive. We count at least four news stories about production delays in 2021 alone and the latest indicated that 2023 was a very real probability.
Tesla’s not the only one to experience production delays but the now Texas-based EV company has a notorious track record for missing goals they set for themselves. The last two years have been plagued with well, a plagued, which brought parts supply issues and shortages. Tesla’s also heavily focused on its current line-up, specifically the globally well-received Model 3 and ultra-popular Model Y SUV.
At this point, the Cybertruck will officially be late to the electric truck game. With offerings from Ford, GM, and Rivian either on the road or expected to be in 2022, the Cybertruck may not join the party before mid-2023. We wonder if Musk’s summer 2020 assessment that the Cybertruck doesn’t need to succeed, only kick ass, still applies.
