Lichte called GT most beautiful he’s ever drawn.
e-tron GT will debut February 9th
After months of trickling out details, the Audi e-tron GT, the first serious electric performance car from the brand, is nearly here. It’s set to be fully revealed on February 9th, though Audi is being pretty generous with the camouflaged photos as you can see in this latest gallery taken during winter testing released while its designer sings the car’s praises.
As the first electric peformance car from Audi, one that will offer an RS version down the road, the new e-tron GT shares some of its underpinnings with the potent Porsche Taycan. Expect up to 637 hp on that RS model, with still impressive but slightly lower figures for the standard model of the grand tourer.
“The most beautiful car I have ever drawn,” Audi design boss Marc Lichte called it at its show car debut in 2018. Now he talks about his current feelings.
When asked if the car would be a design icon from Audi, he says “a car must acquire this reputation on the road.” Lichte points out cars like the Volkswagen Beetle or Porsche 911 as cars standing for a clear attitude. He does say that the gran turismo will represent the brand’s new Living Progress strategy.
Lichte said that the design started not with a desired shape, but instead had efficiency as the basic idea. “We have turned this basic law of physics of electric mobility into the design principle for the e-tron GT. Form follows function, aesthetics arise from efficiency. The new design language creates a stronger flow and thereby creates refined aerodynamics. The design of the e-tron GT thus forms the basis for the design of future electric models.”
The e-tron GT, the latest in Audi’s e-tron electric lineup, will debut in full February 9th and production has already started. Until then, enjoy this gallery of the car playing in snow.
