Core Mini Models Get Refresh for 2022

  • More bumper, less grille for refreshed car

  • New three-shade fade roof option joins list

Mini has just revealed refreshed versions of the 2022 Mini lineup including the Mini 3-door, Mini 5-door, and the convertible, and while there are no major changes under the skin, Mini has made some big changes to the nose.

What you’ll notice first is that new grille, or, rather, the lack thereof. The grill is now full of a body-colour insert that makes the grille area look tiny and the bumper itself look massive. It’s an unusual look for the car, though the brand is somewhat constrained by the need to, well, look like a Mini. It’s also a stark contrast to what’s happening at Mini’s overlord BMW, where the grilles are taking over from the bumpers.

Fog lights have been dropped in favour of what is being called a “bad weather light,” a dimmed cornering light built into the adaptive LED headlights that has the same effect. We’ll point out that the details for the new model come from Mini head office, not Mini Canada, so those matrix LEDs (as well as some of the other updates) might not make it here.

The rear bumpers are also updated with a new dark insert that at least gives the appearance of being better able to resist small parking impacts. Union Jack taillights are now standard as well.

Inside, there is a new digital dash cluster as well as a new design for the center screen with 8.8-inch display. The vents have been reshaped and the door panel and dash inserts are also new. A new steering wheel offers heating and new finishes.

One of the most interesting changes is the multitone roof. Since contrast colour roofs are now common, Mini needed something different, and that’s the roof that features a colour fade from San Marino blue through to black across the top, finished in a new spray process. We hope they’ll add more colour options to the list for that roof, and despite the robotic paint process, Mini says each one will be just a little bit different.

Expect the new Mini models to arrive at dealers in the spring, with the cars headed to market starting in March.
