We’re big fans Honda’s Civic Type R and this, despite the fact that Honda only recently deemed the North American market worthy of its ultimate Civic.
We did have access to the Civic Si through a few generations but the 6th generation EJ SiR coupe was the first to introduce us the Civic’s true potential. The EP3 Civic SiR, also affectionally known as the “Egg” or “Van” was powered by the same 1.6-litre 160-horsepower engine as the EJ in North America. I remember test driving it and thinking how terrible the car was overall – it was slow and the opposite f sporty and edgy. At the time, the SiR was the only Civic hatchback on the market so grand-mothers were more likely to buy one than driving enthusiasts.
After a few more Civic Si, the latter ones being very good indeed, we finally got a real Civic Type R and well, it’s amazing. The guys at Cars.co.za got six versions of the Super Civic together and put them through some, let’s say, delicate paces while their owners watched on.
As you might have guessed, the newest Type R is blisteringly fast but what we didn’t expect is that their favorite vintage Type R was the EP3… We in North America have never truly experienced what a true legendary Type R is like.
