Customers who ordered a Ford Mustang Mach-E First Edition are getting a little something extra with the new electric horses. A 3D-printed wireframe pony will be shipped to every US First Edition customer, printed in a colour that matches their vehicles.
The little version of the sculpture is based on the much larger one that Ford featured on set when it revealed the Mach-E way back in 2019. The wireframe ponies are 3D printed at the Ford Advanced Manufacturing Center and are then dyed in Rapid Red, Grabber Blue, or Carbonized Gray, the colours of the first edition cars.
Owners will also get a baseplate that includes the VIN of the Mustang Mach-E the customer has purchased.
“This isn’t the first time we’ve 3D-printed a vehicle part, but this one is different,” said Harold Sears, technical leader for additive manufacturing. “It highlights a special connection with the customer and is really exciting because it showcases the potential to personalize. When you think additive manufacturing, you think of making parts, assembly fixtures or jigs to help build a vehicle, but this is another place where additive manufacturing can shine.”
The Mustang Mach-E has already seen long delays for some potential buyers, with Ford saying that the delays were “part of our commitment to deliver a quality vehicle to customers.” The vehicles needed to undergo further quality checks before being shipped to customers. Some buyers of standard Mach-E models saw benefits including extra free charging sessions.
Ford is showing off in photos some of the processes of how the wireframe pony came from the computer to life.
