Ford Ranger Thunder Special Edition Launched in Europe With Raptor Engine

  • New truck is the third generation of special edition Ranger Thunder models
  • Only 4,500 units will be built, all in Europe
  • Power comes from the Ranger Raptor’s 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel

The Ford Ranger Thunder launched today in Europe with the same engine found in the Ranger Raptor, distinctive red trim, a blacked out grille and a couple other design features that make it stand out.

Set to go on sale only in Europe, it’s is the third generation of limited edition Ranger Thunder versions to debut after models were offered in 2003 and 2009. Remember the Ford Ranger Thunderbolt offered from 2001 to 2003? Probably not, but it was designed by SLP engineering as a competitor to the Chevrolet S-10. This new Thunder is in the same mold, although chances we see it here in North America are next to none.

The Ford Ranger Thunder is powered by the same 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel that powers the European Ranger Raptor. It delivers 210 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

This new Ranger version reminds us that our Ranger here in North America is lacking in options. The Ranger itself is a fine mid-size pickup, but it has limited customization options and limited trims when you compare it to its competition or other Ranger models around the world. We’d love to see a more rugged Ranger trim to compete with the Gladiator Rubicon or Toyota Tacoma TRD, for example. Oh how the Ranger Raptor would be perfect for just that purpose.
