The Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 fuel cell electric truck is based on the Colorado ZR2 off-road pickup and features off-road capability equal to or greater than current military field vehicles. The hydrogen-powered fuel cell in the ZH2 runs nearly silent, can export up to 25 kW of electric power and generate up to two gallons of useable water per hour from its only emission, which is water vapor.
Chevrolet is planning a couple of new Silverado models. At least that’s according to a pair of trademark filings dug up last week that show GM is looking at a possible Raptor and TRX fighter as well as one powered by alternative fuels.
The first of the two trademarks discovered by CarBuzz is for ZRX. The Silverado ZRX is expected to compete with the Ford F-150 Raptor R and the Ram 1500 TRX. Two boosted off-road beasts.
ZRX would follow GM’s current naming pattern for its off-road trucks, including the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2. GM’s three-character names are based on what the company calls an RPO. Before marketing got a hold on them, codes like ZR2, Z01, and Z06 went on the vehicle’s build sheet and described the options that the vehicle came with.
In order to compete with the Ford and Ram trucks, Chevrolet would need more horsepower. Which they could get by cramming in the supercharged 6.2L V8 found in the Cadillac Escalade-V. That one makes 682 hp, 162 more than the ZR2.
GM’s other trademark was for ZH2. H2 is how hydrogen is normally written out. That’s the same hydrogen that would be used in a fuel cell, as a way to power a pickup with zero tailpipe emissions. GM has been working on the hydrogen fuel cell for decades. Back in 2016, Chevrolet showed a Colorado ZH2 which demonstrated a fuel cell off-roader with military uses.
These are simple trademarks, so could lead to nothing. But they could also be some very interesting pickups. We’ll have to wait and see.
