Infiniti unveiled its second Project Black S concept today when it took the wraps off a hybrid-powered, mean looking prototype at the Paris Motor Show.
The vehicle comes two years after the first Black S Infiniti was presented at the Geneva International Auto Show in March 2017.
Formula One Technology Under the Hood
This version gets a hybrid engine which combines a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, two electric motors and three generators. The entire setup is heavily inspired by Formula 1. The V6 accounts for about 400 horsepower of the Black S Project’s 563 total horsepower.
The generators serve to collect energy from both braking and exhaust gases generated when accelerating. In other words, going or stopping, the Black S is always recycling some form of energy which is then stored in a 4.4 kWh lithium-ion battery that can power the turbine blades which adds the extra 163 horsepower.
Could the Project Black S eventually find its way to dealerships? Sure. Could a production version feature the same F1-tuned engine setup? Why not.
The only problem at the moment is that Infiniti as a brand needs a lot of things and a lot of new models, and a semi-exotic six-figure AMG and BMW M fighter with a race car engine isn’t one of them.
Still, our fingers are certainly crossed.
