As we get to drive news cars and SUVs every week, head-up displays (HUD) are fairly common. Some are terrible but most are useful and user-friendly. They all feature 2D displays on either a small pop-up screen or the information is projected on the windshield. Jaguar Land Rover is looking to take this technology to the next level by introducing a 3D display.
With help from the United Kingdom’s University of Cambridge, JLR has come up with a projection system that shows the desired information on the road ahead on the windscreen. The image overlaps the said road with driving and navigational details.
There’s also a system that projects personalized 3D infotainment for vehicle passengers. While the 3D HUD is something that could work today, although we think there are plenty enough distractions on board the car already, the 3D infotainment display would be reserved for autonomous cars. What’s interesting is that, with head- and eye-tracking technology, the system could position 3D projections for each individual passenger on board.
I think we all agree that 3D technology is long overdue in vehicles however the thought of a large display overlapping the road ahead on the windshield on top of three or four screens in the car is recipe for bad driving. I guess we need to be thankful for active safety features…
