The EV5 becomes the fourth model to wear the Weekender badge as a concept, following the EV9, PV5, and Tasman. Each explores its own interpretation of an outdoor-oriented vehicle. So far, none of the Weekender concepts have made the jump to production, but that could change as demand for adventure-ready trims continues to grow. It’s very possible that Weekender will become Kia’s dedicated adventure sub-brand for its EV lineup, much like X-Line serves combustion-powered models.
Designed by the Kia China Style team, the concept stands out immediately. It sits higher thanks to a lifted suspension, larger wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, and increased ground clearance that reinforces its confident posture.
The body wears a matte beige finish accented with lime details—a visual signature now closely linked to Weekender variants. The body kit has been thoroughly reworked:
Kia even added modular side-mounted attachment points for extra gear—a direct nod to the utilitarian character of the Land Rover Defender.
Inside, the changes go deeper than what’s typically seen on a concept derived from an existing model. The panoramic display now stretches in front of the passenger, paired with a slimmer digital instrument cluster.
Other notable upgrades include:
Functionality also takes centre stage, with mounted cupholders and storage units along the cargo walls, plus additional ceiling rails for securing camping equipment. The concept maximizes storage everywhere it can.
Kia hasn’t released any technical details for the concept. It remains unclear whether the EV5 Weekender differs mechanically from the production EV5 beyond its lifted suspension.
For context, the EV5 rides on the E-GMP platform and is offered in FWD or AWD globally, with multiple battery choices depending on the market. If a production model happens, AWD is a near certainty. Currently, the AWD EV5 delivers 230 kW (308 hp) and 354 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 81.4-kWh battery.
A higher-performance GT variant has also been confirmed, so it’s fair to imagine the GT’s powertrain eventually finding its way into a future Weekender version.
Given the rising demand for EVs capable of light off-road adventure, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kia eventually add a Weekender version to the EV5 lineup. Kia has a strong record of turning concepts into production vehicles, and this one already looks remarkably close to the finish line.
