One of the only new cars ever sold with six doors is now dead. Mini has revealed that the Mini Clubman, the quirky quasi-station wagon, has just gotten the axe, with production ending at the Oxford plant. The company has built more than 1.1 million of the variant since 1969, with around half of those in the modern generation.
We’ve known the end was coming for some time. The automaker announced last year that the model would be dropped. There were also final edition special trims sold in some regions. In its place, Mini is expected to build the Aceman electric vehicle.
When Mini announced the end of the Clubman, it was the Countryman to blame. The taller, wider, and generally larger Mini Countryman was selling more copies. Enough that it no longer made sense to make both vehicles.
The car’s main feature was its split-opening rear doors. The modern versions of the Clubman were sold initially with those split rear doors and a rear-opening half-door for back seat passengers. The next generation took the standard four-door Mini and kept the split-open rear doors.
