MINI Clubman No Longer Available In Canada

  • The MINI Clubman was introduced in Canada for the 2008 model year.

  • The second-generation Clubman arrived for the 2016 model year.

  • The Clubman is still on sale in the United States.

The MINI Clubman is no longer part of the quirky English brand’s lineup in Canada, after a 15-year run spanning two generations. It’s worth noting that the Clubman is still offered in the U.S. market.

The first-generation MINI Clubman was introduced in Canada for the 2008 model year as a slightly stretched variant of the MINI 3-Door hatchback. It sported a passenger-side, rearward opening half-door—dubbed the Clubdoor—allowing easier access to the rear-seat area. It also featured two swing-open rear doors to facilitate loading the car’s cargo hold. It was available is base Cooper and more powerful Cooper S variants, with a base price of $26,400 before freight and delivery charges. The base Cooper was equipped with a naturally aspirated 1.6L inline-four that developed 118 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, while the Cooper S’ turbo 1.6 four generated 172 hp and 192 lb-ft.

A new delivery van-style variant called the MINI Clubvan, with no rear quarter windows, appeared in Canada for the 2023 model year, but was quickly dropped due to lack of interest.

The second-generation MINI Clubman arrived for the 2016 model year, with bigger proportions inside and out, conventional rear-seat doors on each side, and the signature swing-open cargo area doors. It shared its architecture with the MINI Countryman crossover and, eventually, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe which is also no longer in Canada following the 2022 model year. There was no 2015 model-year Clubman in Canada.

The Clubman’s second generation was offered in base Cooper, Cooper S and hot-road John Cooper Works Clubman variant, with the more recent model years bringing the ALL4 all-wheel drivetrain as standard equipment. The Cooper was equipped with a turbocharged 1.5L inline-three with 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the Cooper S boasted a turbo 2.0L four with 189 hp and 206 lb-ft. While the 2016-to-2019 JCW received a turbo 2.0L four with 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, it was blessed with 301 hp and 332 lb-ft from 2020 to 2022.

For the final, 2022 model year, the Cooper S Clubman ALL4 was listed at $36,245 including freight and delivery charges, while the John Cooper Works Clubman ALL4 retailed for $43,835.

The MINI Clubman was rather unique in the marketplace, which we loosely considered a hatchback or wagon that once competed with models such as the Fiat 500L, the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen and the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. With all these rivals gone, the Clubman was becoming less relevant in the marketplace, especially with the trendier Countryman crossover in the brand’s lineup. The latter is due for a redesign for the 2024 model year, and it’s unclear if there will be a next-generation Clubman as well.
