The Polestar 2 performed fairly well in the moose test conducted by Km77.com in Spain, but it still leaves room for improvement.
Indeed, the Swedish electric sedan managed to avoid all of the cones when entering the testing area at a speed of 74 km/h.
This places it in the middle of the pack when compared to other electric vehicles, in front of the BMW i4 but behind the Tesla Model 3.
The test consists of suddenly avoiding a series of cones that represent an obstacle, such as a moose, by jumping in the left lane but immediately returning to the right lane to avoid oncoming traffic.
This is a very demanding test that shows the dynamic qualities of the vehicle’s platform and the safety of its handling.
During the test, it was found that the Polestar 2 equipped with the Performance package, which includes Öhlins adjustable shock absorbers, had a tendency to understeer when pushed hard in the corners.
This is in contrast with the BMW i4, which tended to oversteer quite dramatically and managed to complete the test only when entering at 73 km/h. This small difference in speed doesn’t make the i4 less safe out on the road, but its handling could.
Indeed, understeering is generally regarded as safer because it is easier to control by novice drivers than oversteering, which requires quick and precise corrections with the steering wheel in order to stay on the intended path.
The Polestar was also significantly quicker than the BMW in the regular slalom test, completing it in 22,8 seconds compared to the 24 seconds it took the i4. In addition, the BMW’s oversteering caused the driver to completely lose control and end up in the grass once the stability control was deactivated.
This slalom time by the Polestar 2 is quite impressive since it is the quickest on record for this test, but the Tesla Model 3 and Y have yet to partake.
These two models are expected to be quicker since they are also the champions of the moose test, with an entry speed of 83 km/h.
