Volvo is ramping up EV production at their Ghent, Belgium plant. Despite this, demand for the Swedish company’s latest EV, the C40, is outstripping current production capabilities. As of now, 2021 is sold out and 2022 slots are already into February.
Today’s numbers are not huge however Volvo will change this next year. For 2021, 6,000 to 7,000 C40 will have been assembled but 2022 promises a dramatic increase in output. The Ghent factory is on track to build 200,000 vehicles in 2021 and in the past, it put together over 266,000 units. Next year, according to Automotive News Europe, Volvo wants EVs to represent 60% of the factory’s output meaning that at least 100,000 of them will leave the assembly line in 2022.
The Volvo C40 hits the marks with sleek fastback-like styling with just enough utility-vehicle built-in.
“The C40 is much more of a ‘me’ car. I want to express myself visually with the product that I own and drive,” Volvo Chief Technology Officer Henrik Green told Automotive News Europe earlier this year. “It still captures a lot of the practicality from the XC40 but it’s more of an individualist’s car than a practical family car.”
Volvo Canada has yet to release the C40’s pricing. In the US, it is priced from $58,750.
