Next-Generation Subaru WRX Debut Expected In October

  • The WRX and WRX STI will be the last Subaru models to be electrified.

  • Both sports compact cars will be powered by the turbocharged 2.4-litre Boxer engine.

The coming of the new next-generation Subaru WRX and WRX STI seems like years in the making. There were reports that these popular sport compact cars were expected to arrive in late 2020, which was already three years after the Viziv Performance concept was revealed.

It appears as though the wait will be worth it. We already knew that the future WRX STI was going to be powered by the FA24 turbocharged 2.4-litre Boxer 4-cylinder engine and was to deliver 400 horsepower. Now, it looks as though the WRX will drop the current turbocharged 2.0-litre and also adopt the FA24.

Torque News reports that the Subaru WRX STI will in fact offer 395 horsepower handily making it the most powerful high-performance sport compact car in the segment. The WRX, on the other hand, with an impressive 286 horsepower making it, not only the most powerful WRX ever, but this will land it on top as the king of the sport compacts, well ahead of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic Si.

The real good news is that the new WRX will be offered with a choice between a 6-speed manual and an optional Sport Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission. The WRX STI will keep the blessed 6-speed manual. Size-wise, the WRX is expected to be a little longer and wider than the car it will replace.

We’ll know more this October.
