All electric or hybrid? Not clear yet.
Subaru will not be introducing a current-generation STI.
Subaru’s STI sub-brand is one of the most respected when it comes to motorsports. Subaru Tecnica International made its name in the World Rally Championship by essentially conquering the series in the 1990s. The best-known off-shoot of this adventure is the Subaru WRX.
An STI version of the WRX quickly joined the mix and instantly became a sport compact car legend. The latest generation of the WRX was introduced about two years ago but no STI iteration is in the cards. The reason behind this decision comes down to emissions and regulations, according to Subaru.
This does not mean that the STI is dead. The internet figured out that electrification was the solution and now, according to Car and Driver, this is what’s going to happen. Subaru is currently working on some kind of electrified powertrain for the next one. It should be built on the Subaru Solterra’s platform known as the e-Subaru Global Platform, if it’s to be all-electric, which will probably be the case.
Based on the source, the new STI isn’t expected before 2028 or right around the time the next generation WRX is due.
