Patent Drawings Show Next BMW 5 Series Touring

  • New 5er wagon revealed in drawings

  • Model expected to share sedan powertrains

BMW has just launched the new 5 Series, but what about the wagon? The upcoming 5 Series Touring has been spotted in heavily camouflaged form during prototype testing, but now we have a much better look.

Carscoops dug up UK patent drawings that show the new wagon. There’s not much of a surprise, it’s just a 5 Series until you get to the top of the A-Pillars. It has the new 5’s flush door handles and a grille that is wonderfully reasonably sized. From the pillars back, the car has a traditional upright BMW wagon shape.

BMW does seem to have increased how the rear glass kicks up as it approaches the hatch. This makes it look more like the company’s X series crossovers, and will likely cut into the amount of light inside the car and make rear visibility a bit worse than in the current car. That back window is pretty tiny for a big wagon.

The drawings don’t have any tech info, but it is probably going to get the same drivelines as the 5er sedan. The new BMW 5 Series gets multiple electric power levels as well as gas engines. We’re hoping for an M5 version of the wagon as well. It’s not likely that BMW will do that since it hasn’t in a couple of generations, but the first-ever M3 wagon has us optimistic.

Will the new 5er wagon come to North America? Probably not, but we can remain optimistic, right? Absolutely. Expect the official reveal sometime early next year.
