Ram’s Boss Would Like a North American Rampage — But Isn’t Doing Anything

While Ford is enjoying massive success with the Maverick, GM and Ram are not reacting beyond saying they would also like to have a compact pickup. A poor reading of the market, weak planning and strategic errors are to blame. Fair enough — but what comes next?

  • It would represent fierce competition for the Ford Maverick.
  • In Europe, it is offered in R/T and Rebel versions.

It’s fair to say there is room for additional compact pickups in North America. We know that traditional pickup buyers have a strong preference for what is perceived as “American.” Ram’s new boss, Tim Kuniskis, embodies that ideology and approach perfectly, as demonstrated by the return of the Ram TRX.

Ford and Hyundai

Ford has seen unexpected success with the Maverick. While the automaker initially intended it to be just another option in its lineup, the model quickly became a market sensation. As a result, Ford continues to expand the range with more variants, such as the Tremor and Lobo, each offering a distinct approach.

By contrast, the other compact pickup, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, is losing momentum in the United States, with a significant drop in sales. The model has completely disappeared from the Canadian market for the 2026 model year due to rising import costs imposed by Canadian counter-tariffs.

What Is Ram Doing When It Comes to Other Pickup Options in North America?

For now, Ram has already confirmed that the Dakota, a mid-size pickup, will return — technically in 2027. That is the timeline currently communicated by the manufacturer. However, enthusiasts waiting for it should remember that Stellantis is often late when it comes to delivering new vehicles. Whether it arrives in 2027, 2028 or later remains to be seen. It’s also worth noting that the Dakota has not yet been spotted in spy photos for early testing.

Interviewed by Mopar Insiders, Kuniskis commented on the Rampage, a compact pickup sold globally that would be the Maverick’s natural rival. Kuniskis stated:

“Would I consider [the Rampage]? Absolutely. Do I think the Rampage is awesome? Yes. Would I love to have it in the United States? Yes. That doesn’t mean that we’re going to do it.”

Being pragmatic, he fully understands that when a vehicle is not designed to meet North American standards, there is little — if any — chance it can be sold in the United States and Canada. At this point, regulations are simply too strict. Kuniskis added:

“There are structural requirements, there are headlight requirements, and there are crash tests. It is a huge investment.”

Forget It for Now

It’s clear that while Kuniskis would like to have it, Stellantis’ lack of forward planning means we won’t see the Rampage anytime soon. In fact, the best hope of getting it would be for the next generation to be developed as a truly global model. Stellantis would certainly have the ability to do so, since the European Rampage is built on the same platform as the Jeep Compass.

What Is the Rampage Made Of?

The Rampage is sold in several global markets, notably Brazil, where it is manufactured. There is also a European version that would be far better suited to Canada. The model is offered in two styles and two personalities: R/T and Rebel. Under the hood, it features the turbocharged 2.0-litre Hurricane four-cylinder engine producing 272 horsepower. In Europe, it also benefits from a 2.2-litre turbodiesel option rated at 200 hp.
