The Fiat 500 launched in Canada in 2011 to some fanfare. The car’s design, introduced in Europe for the 2007 model year, was already ageing but it mattered not – The Fiat was immensely cool, quirky and unique. The Abarth version arrived two years later but it was almost too little too late as interest in the 500 was already dying off.
Of the many reasons why the Fiat 500 fizzled out, other than reliability, was that it severely lacked versatility. At best, it was a 2+2 seater with an extra glove box in the rear. It was also immensely expensive for what was delivered. On the other hand, the Fiat Abarth was something of a bargain at $25,000. For the price, no other small car brought as much attitude, personality and noises to the table. Despite this, all other downsides, including a terrible driving position still applied.
The new Fiat 500e will ride on a slightly larger platform which means the car will be marginally larger, longer and taller than the old 500. Thus, the new 500 is roomier on the inside… It is doubtful that this is enough to warrant the return of the 500.
With its larger black, lowered ride height, multiple air intakes on the deeper front bumper and necessary red accents throughout the car, including the interior, this Abarth rendering is convincing.
