Rivian adds Tech and Horsepower for 2025 R1T and R1S

  • A new Tri-Motor option delivers 850 hp and 1 103 ft-lb.

  • The maximum range is 676 km.

Rivian continues to evolve, with the forthcoming arrival of the R2 crossover and even more with the cute R3. However, the small American manufacturer must keep an eye on its two flagship vehicles, the R1T pickup and the R1S mid-size SUV.

For the coming year, Rivian is making a few modifications to its utility duo, with the Quad-Motor option transforms the truck into a veritable electric bombshell. With 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 ft-lb of torque, the R1T – and the R1S SUV – needs just 2.5 seconds to reach a speed of 60 mph (or 96 kn/h). This is obviously achieved using the Launch Control. Rivian also boasts powertrains developed and built entirely in-house. In addition to the two-motor variant, Rivian also inserts an intermediate Tri-motor version, which delivers 850 hp and 1,103 ft-lb of torque.

The battery packs also feature new modules and more efficient packaging, facilitating vehicle maintenance. Maximum range (with the Max battery) is 676 km, while the Intermediate battery allows distances of 531 km between recharges. Rivian has also added a Standard lithium-iron-phosphate battery, which still gives an estimated range of 435 km.

An interesting advance for 2025 is the reduction in the number of on-board computers (ECUs) from 17 to 7, while the new configuration allows information to be shared between ECU modules. Engineers have also found a way to reduce the weight of the R1T by removing no less than 44 lbs of on-board wiring. And while we’re about weight, the batteries have also lost a few pounds for the new year.

Also note the addition of oil cooling to enhance performance, as well as the integration of a heat pump on all variants. The new electronically tinted glass roof is a must for hotter climates, and the main suspension components have been revised.

Finally, the tailights and headlights have been slightly redesigned, with the removal of the fog lamps to accommodate the new, more efficient headlamps. And let’s not forget these good-looking  aerodynamic wheels.

The same changes are planned for the R1S SUV, whether in terms of available engines or aesthetic modifications.
