The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV/Bolt EUV will be its last model year

  • Next year, the Orion factory will be reorganized to assemble the new Silverado EV pickup truck.

  • The Chevrolet Bolt EV first appeared in 2016, as a 2017 model year.

  • The new Chevrolet Equinox EV will become the brand’s most affordable EV starting from 2024.

It’s the end of the road for the Chevrolet Bolt EV and its utilitarian variant the Bolt EUV. General Motors CEO Mary Barra made the announcement this week to analysts from Wall Street. The 2023 model year will therefore be the last of the line, as Chevrolet will now focus on assembling electric vehicles based on its new forward-looking Ultium electric platform.

In particular, the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV will take over the space occupied by the two variants of the Bolt EV, the car that has been on the road since 2016 as Chevrolet went after the few other players in the industry that had already entered the market with their first EV at the time.

Let’s remember that the Bolt EV, despite a recall campaign that greatly damaged the model’s reputation last year, quickly became a public favorite thanks to its more than respectable range – the Bolt EV that was first offered with a possible distance between recharges of 383 km, before being updated to offer 417 km of range -, but also by its reasonable price.

The GM executive also added that this decision would allow Chevrolet to dedicate the Orion plant, where the current generation Bolt EV is assembled, to the production of the Silverado EV pickup. The full-size, 100 percent electric pickup will also be assembled at the Factory Zero and Hamtramck plants. The annual production capacity for the Silverado EV with these three plants in operation will give GM the ability to produce 600,000 trucks per year.

In fact, the goal is to reach the one million electric vehicles per year mark by 2025, with GM also launching its new GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq models, not to mention the GMC version of this Chevrolet Silverado EV, which will unsurprisingly be called Sierra EV.

According to Chevrolet, the Bolt EV / Bolt EUV tandem would have allowed to get a new clientele (about 75%) for the brand. What’s more, 80% of these new Chevrolet customers said they would buy another Chevrolet vehicle.
