Volkswagen Motorsport is a big deal just about everywhere else in the world, except for North America. Actually, Touring Car racing series are huge in Africa and Europe, and that’s what we should be into. If we were, we’d get to see racecars like this stunning new MK8 Volkswagen Golf GTI GTC built to defend Volkswagen’s Global Touring Car Championship title.
Up until last year, Volkswagen’s race team ran a prepared Jetta but production of the right-hand-drive versions, on which it was built, is discontinued. This unfortunate bit of news coincides with the arrival of the all-new MK8 Golf GTI and it seems quite obvious that no one’s complaining.
There are no details or specs available for the new racecar but it is underpinned by a chrome-moly tubular structure, and, as the rules stipulate, run a single ECU to control performance, and shares wheels and tires with the remainder of the field.
If anything, the new GTI looks leagues better than the Jetta it replaces. So, those left in the GTI’s wake at the races will at least get a nicer view.
