Toyota Bringing Corolla Cross to Canada With Standard Heated Seats

  • New crossover expands Corolla line

  • Expect to see loads of this small crossover with optional AWD

Toyota is also bringing the Corolla Cross to Canada. The new model is set to arrive in the third quarter of this year, and our model will offer Canada-exclusive features like standard heated seats.

The Toyota Corolla Cross is a lifted and elongated version of the Corolla. Except that it has much more rugged SUV styling and offers up all-wheel drive as well. Maybe think of it more as a 3/4 scale RAV4. It slots in between the C-HR and RAV4, and unlike the C-HR it will offer available all-wheel drive.

At around 250 mm longer than the standard Corolla sedan, it will offer more cargo and interior space than either the Corolla sedan or hatch. A total of 722 L, though it’s not significantly more than the 650 or so offered in the hatch.

Still, buyers clearly prefer a crossover to a hatch, especially one that looks like this, and Toyota Canada said they expect it to quickly outpace the C-HR. We think it might come close to outpacing the Corolla car versions as well.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross will be offered in L, LE, and XLE trim levels, all with the 169 hp 2.0L four from the Corolla S trims and Toyota’s CVT that has a physical first gear for better response. Front-drive is standard, AWD is optional. Front-drive models should return an estimated 7.4 L/100 km combined fuel economy rating with 7.8 for AWD. AWD models get an independent rear suspension and all can tow up to 1,500 lbs.

As we said, heated front seats are standard across the board, as is a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. An 8.0-inch system is optional and all come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The layout is a near-copy of the standard Corollas.

Safety Sense 2.0 is standard with radar cruise, pre-collision assist, and other driver assistance features, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are on LE and XLE. Toyota says a wide range of lifestyle accessories including bike racks will be offered.

  • If Toyota doesn't offer a hybrid option for the Corolla Cross, I will not consider it for purchase. Let's hope the new Honda HR-V will have the hybrid option. It's better looking anyway.
