A new ride-hail partnership in Vancouver will bring fuel cell vehicles to Lyft drivers and riders. The partnership is a first in Canada, between Toyota and Lyft, and is meant to help create awareness of the fuel cell technology while reducing emissions.
It’s called the Kinto Share program, and it allows eligible Lyft drivers to rent a Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell sedan through the Kinto Share Canada app. The cars can be picked up at one of three Toyota dealers on the Lower Mainland and the cost to the driver is $198 per week plus taxes and fees. The price includes insurance, maintenance, and unlimited kilometres, but it appears drivers are responsible for filling the vehicles.
The Mirai is powered by a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity, with a 500 km range, five-minute refuelling, and tailpipe emissions that are only water.
“Hydrogen will play a significant role in B.C.’s clean energy future, generating environmental and economic benefits across the province,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “This new partnership will help demonstrate these benefits, move us toward our CleanBC goals and put B.C. on the road to a clean energy future.”
There are currently three hydrogen filling stations in BC, located in Vancouver and Burnaby, with more expected by end of year.
