It’s unclear as to what it will be, but it could sit above the Golf R.
Currently, the Golf is available in GTI, GTI Clubsport, and R variants.
Might this be a TCR?
We’ll find out in February.
The Volkswagen Golf might be all but dead in North America but at the very least, we still get the GTI and R, for now. Over in Europe, Golf and Volkswagen fans have had the privilege of getting access to numerous special versions over the generations including the GTE and the TCR.
The latter is the iteration we think Volkswagen is about to announce. The teaser image has a number of tell-tale signs starting with the large rear hatch-mounted spoiler. In fact, we’re quite certain this is the TCR as spy video of a working GTI TCR prototype clearly shows the very same spoiler. This spoiler is also available as part of the optional Performance Pack.
Another sign is the front bumper’s profile resembles that of the MK8 Golf R, as suggested by Auto Express. Although the latter believes this is a GTI Clubsport S or an R Clubsport, we’re more inclined to believe it’s a TCR if mostly because of the spy video released in September of 2020.
Bottom line, the TCR or GTI Clubsport S or R Clubsport will likely be powered by Volkswagen’s omnipresent 2.0-litre turbocharged EA888 4-cylinder motor and with over 300 horsepower. Whatever it is, it’s not coming to North America.
