Andreas Mindt, the head of design at Volkswagen, has just confirmed that an electric Volkswagen GTI will arrive in 2026. Better than that, he’s given us a drawing showing what it might look like.
The designer posted the confirmation to Instagram. The post was captioned “The Golf GTI was first unveiled at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show with a production run of 5000 units. To date, we have sold more than 2.8 million. In 2026, we will introduce an electric version of this iconic model.”
Volkswagen had already teased a potential electric GTI. The ID. GTI concept from earlier this year was based on the ID.2. At the time it was just a concept. Volkswagen wouldn’t confirm anything, other than that the company was pursuing the idea.
Mindt’s sketch is a bit extreme for production, with bulging wheel arches and a mean stance. As much as we like the sketch, look to the ID. GTI concept for a much better look at what we can expect to see go on sale in 2026.
As far as power, expect its electric driveline to deliver somewhere in the 250 range, keeping it in line with the current gas GTI models. AWD is always a possibility with electric vehicles, but really would spoil the tradition and feel of the front-drive hot hatch. There’s always R for an AWD mode.
