Volvo has revealed the new XC70 crossover (not to be confused with the previous beloved XC70 station wagon), its first plug-in hybrid model boasting over 200 km (140 km EPA) of all-electric range. The vehicle is now available for pre-order in China, with a European release confirmed for a later stage.
Built on Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture, the XC70 is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines an electric motor and combustion engine, enabling a total estimated driving range of more than 1,200 kilometres. DC fast charging allows the battery to recharge from empty (not 10 or 20%) to 80% in 23 minutes, and vehicle-to-load functionality enables external devices to be powered using the car’s battery.
Although full powertrain specifications have not been released, the XC70 is expected to share components with the Lynk & Co 08, a related model under the Geely umbrella. The Lynk & Co 08 offers up to 593 hp and 667 lb-ft of torque in its dual-motor configuration, paired with a 39.6 kWh battery capable of up to 245 km under CLTC testing. Lower-range variants use a 21.2 kWh battery rated at 120 km.
The XC70 features the brand’s and Polestar’s established crossover design with a closed grille, aerodynamic shutters, and vertical C-shaped taillights. The cabin includes a 15.4-inch centre display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional 92-inch augmented reality head-up display. Scandinavian design principles are reflected in the use of minimalist materials and intuitive cabin layout.
Connectivity and safety technologies include an AI-powered voice assistant, remote app-based controls, over-the-air software updates, and Volvo’s Safe Space Technology suite.
Production of the XC70 has already begun in China. Volvo has stated that the vehicle is targeted at customers who seek the benefits of electric driving without committing to a fully electric vehicle. A U.S. launch is not expected due to current tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles. If Canada works a deal out with China on tariffs, who knows, maybe we’ll see it on our roads in the future.
