2025 Volvo V60
Volvo may reintroduce wagons to its lineup, including in the North American market, according to comments made by Michael Fleiss, the company’s Chief Strategy and Product Officer. Speaking in Stockholm ahead of the reveal of the 2027 EX60, Fleiss said to “watch this space” when asked about the brand’s future with wagons.
This is the best news to come out of the auto industry so far this year.
Fleiss confirmed the Swedish automaker is actively reassessing the wagon segment. “We are looking into that,” he said, noting that wagons remain a strong category, especially in markets where vehicle efficiency and aerodynamics are critical, which are key priorities in the electric vehicle era.
The executive also acknowledged the brand’s historical link to wagons. “Volvo is known for wagons,” he said, while pointing to technological shifts that may renew consumer interest. Fleiss suggested that with powertrains no longer a key differentiator in EVs, Volvo’s electric platform, the SPA3, which underpins the upcoming EX60 and Polestar 7, positions the company well to compete in that space.
“Yes,” Fleiss said when asked whether there is still a viable market for wagons in the United States. He further highlighted that interest in wagons is resurging in China and Europe, calling the trend a reversal from a decade ago when wagons were widely considered commercially unviable.
“Ten years ago, it was a no-go, but now it’s coming,” Fleiss said. He also noted that while Europe continues to be the largest market for wagons, expanding availability to North America is a possibility: “Why not, if you have one, also sell it in the U.S.?”
While no specific model or production timeline was announced, Fleiss indicated that any future Volvo wagons would likely be electrified. This could include fully electric models on the SPA3 platform as well as long-range plug-in hybrids capable of up to 160 km of electric driving.
Under Geely, existing wagon or shooting brakes include the Zeeker 001 and recently launched Zeeker 007. Though neither are Volvo-like, the point is that Volvo and Geely won’t need to dig very far for inspiration, parts, or ideas. Then there’s the sublime Polestar 3 that would require little more than a roofline/hatch adjustment to make a station wagon…
On a final note, I think Volvo should build and sell a 240-inspired retro wagon. When Volvo does, and it works, please send one to Motor Illustrated Towers, Montreal, QC, Canada, C/O Matt St-Pierre. Thanks. Yes, I’m very excited.
