Toyota to Showcase Two versions of its cute and versatile IMV 0 concept in Tokyo

  • North America probably won’t receive this cute and versatile pickup truck.

  • Possibilities are endless with this truck.

  • Drivetrain options haven’t been revealed yet.

Toyota’s booth at the Tokyo Mobility Show is likely to be one of the busiest this year. The Japanese exhibition, which opens in just a few days’ time, promises to be a colorful affair this year, with several major presentations from local OEMs.

On Toyota’s side, the presentation of two electric concepts is already substantial, but with two other pickup studies based on the IMV range, unveiled earlier in concept form back in 2022, visitors will have several reasons to spend a lot of time in this corner of the show. Toyota will showcase an IMV pickup truck transformed into a café, while an extra one will be a capsule bar where visitors can receive surprises.

The IMV 0 (or Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) offers a range of customization options to meet the needs of a variety of customers. These include small and medium-sized businesses that don’t necessarily need a large vehicle for their respective activities, for example.

The pickup is reminiscent of the current Toyota Hilux marketed outside North America, but with a retro twist. In fact, the concept vehicle is based on the same architecture as the mid-size truck. At this time, the manufacturer had not yet revealed the type of powertrain for this idea of a multifunctional truck, but the openings on the front bumper suggest that a combustion engine could once again be found under the vehicle’s hood. The electric option – or even hybrid – shouldn’t be crossed off the list of possibilities, however.

What really sets this utilitarian vehicle apart is its flexibility. In this respect, Toyota goes a step further with this series of illustrations showing the range of possibilities with this vehicle, which is expected to enter several markets worldwide. As far as North America is concerned, we’re guessing that the friendly truck won’t be crossing the Pacific Ocean anytime soon.

The adventure version, with its all-terrain tires, towing hooks, auxiliary lighting, spare tire on the roof and roof rack that extends to the rear, is without doubt our favorite. Although for avid campers, the version equipped with this oversized box seems ideal for extended stays away from the city.

Other concepts such as a version for the fire service, ambulance services or simply as a performance truck with lowered rims and suspension are also among the ideas proposed for the truck, which is reminiscent of a certain FJ40 with its retro-flavored front end.

See you in Tokyo in a few days’ time, when Toyota is sure to reveal further details of this IMV 0 concept.
