After a promising debut in South Korea, BMW is set to enthrall the automotive market with the release of its latest BMW 5 Series Sedan and the first-ever BMW i5 Sedan. With German customers receiving the first batch of vehicles on October 21st, the automaker is expanding its footprint in European markets on the same day. Not too far behind, the United States will witness the cars on its roads starting October 28th, followed by a global rollout on November 25th.
Marking the eighth generation, BMW is introducing an electrified avatar through the BMW i5, garnering robust pre-orders that indicate a strong appetite for this electric variant. Available right off the bat in two configurations, the BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan impresses with its potent output of 340 hp and a noteworthy range of 498 to 582 kilometres, as per the WLTP test cycle. Holding the flag at the pinnacle is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan, boasting an exceptional output of 601 hp.
Leading the fleet in driver-assistance systems is the newly introduced Highway Assistant. This feature allows German drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel for extended periods while cruising at speeds up to 130 km/h, so long as they continue to monitor the traffic conditions vigilantly and are prepared to regain control. Additionally, the Automatic Lane Change feature requires only a quick glance at the external mirror to instigate a lane change executed by the automated system, a first-of-its-kind functionality.
BMW fans have another reason to be excited as the new BMW 5 Series Touring is slated to make its grand entry in spring 2024. Mirroring its sedan counterpart, this second body variant will offer a comprehensive range of drives. From high-efficiency combustion engines fortified with 48-volt mild hybrid technology to plug-in hybrids and a brand-new all-electric option, the Touring variant is being meticulously crafted for Europe, Japan, and Taiwan markets. Sadly, the car is not planned for release in Canada or the broader North American market.
