It marks the 70th anniversary of the 356 America Roadster.
The Carrera GTS Cabriolet America will exclusively feature a 7-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive.
The last America was offered during the 911’s 964 generation in 1992.
About 70 years ago, Max Hoffman, from Hoffman Porsche, suggested that the automaker create a specific version of its 356 Roadster. Thus, was born the legendary America and today, Porsche commemorates the original car with a new 992 911-based car for the 2023 model year.
“The brand celebrates its heritage with this exclusive 911 model that brings us back to the roots of the legendary 356 America Roadster from 70 years ago,” said Marc Ouayoun, President and CEO of Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd. “We are delighted to be able to also extend the offer to our Canadian clientele even if in very limited numbers.”
The 2023 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America is about details. Based on the already excellent 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet, the America is a special car as only Porsche knows how to do them. With the right touches, details, and careful thinking and planning, they’ve built another gem that will stand the test of time and become a darling of collectors for decades to come.
Only 115 examples of the 2023 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America will be assembled, 100 of which are slated for the US while the other 15 are headed for Canada. Here’s some trivia: 250 examples of the America Roadster sold in 1992, were made. Incidentally, the 115-unit allocation has no actual significance – It is based on a desire for exclusivity. The America is a package on top of the GTS Cabriolet version meaning that it will be available as part of any Porsche dealer’s existing GTS allocation. If you’re interested, odds are that, by the time you read these lines, it’ll already be too late…
The 2023 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America most defining characteristic is its colour palate. The main shade is called Azure blue 356. It was brought back to life using Porsche’s Paint to Sample Plus and was inspired by the gorgeous 1953 356 America Roadster. The colour caresses the 911’s every line and shares them, along with the doors at least, with decals in white with Guards Red Accents that read “America.” Around back, in the center of the 992’s generous hind quarters, is the model designation “911 Carrera” in white and “GTS” in Guards Red.
The wheels, RS Spyder Design Wheels to be exact, are some of the first tri-color-finished wheels ever offered by Porsche. They are also white, a rare offering as some of the last to be featured in this colour were fitted on the exceptional 997 911 GT3 RS 4.0L. Specifically, the outside portions of the spokes are silver, coupled with their interior in white, and completed with a Guards red pinstripe. The final and most subtle exterior touch is the black windshield frame.
The cabin is another example of fine purposeful details making a world of a difference. The 2023 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America features Guards Red and Pebble Grey cross-stitching throughout the interior including the dashboard and door cards. The central armrest has the word “America” embossed into it.
An optional extended interior package adds a Guards Red 12 o’clock marking on the steering wheel along with cross-stitching. Guards Red and Pebble Grey two-tone stitching to the shift boot and the Sport Seats Plus which also feature a Guards Red “911” stitching on the headrests.
Another element is highlighted in Guards Red with the package and that is the standard manual transmission’s gear pattern on the lever. That’s right, the soon-to-be-rare Carrera GTS Cabriolet America will only be available with a 7-speed manual transmission, coupled to the 473-horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre boxer six-cylinder engine. Rounding out the GTS are the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) Sport, Sport Exhaust, and the Sport Chrono Package.
The 15 2023 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America will be priced from $206,190. The optional extended interior package raises the price to $214,750. Deliveries are planned for late 2022.
