2025 BMW M5 Touring Review: TAKE MY MONEY! I’ll Find the Other $157k Eventually…

  • The 2025 BMW M5 Touring is powered by a 717-horsepower PHEV drivetrain with AWD and 738 lb-ft of torque.

  • It offers around 40 km of EV range thanks to its 14.8-kWh battery, useful for quiet city commutes.

  • A true wagon, it brings back the long-roof performance body style with bold design and exclusivity.

  • Starts at $138,000 in Canada, with our tested model priced at $157,400—slightly more than the sedan.

  • Competes with the Audi RS6 Avant and Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, bridging the gap with plug-in hybrid credentials.

Pros

  • Stunning design and colour combinations

  • Explosive performance with everyday livability

  • Plug-in hybrid efficiency for short-range driving

  • Rare and unique. This is not your typical luxury performance car

Cons

  • On the heavier side compared to direct rivals

  • Small cargo space for a wagon

  • Expensive ceramic brakes and optional extras

  • Limited availability, likely low production numbers

The 2025 BMW M5 Touring is jaw-dropping. This BMW M5 Touring is mind-bendingly beautiful. Finished in Anglesey Green Metallic and fitted with optional Kyalami Orange Merino leather, this car spins heads even when sitting pretty. It has presence, character, and just enough attitude to signal its performance pedigree without going full exaggerated cartoon. I parked it at the park, and even kids swarmed it like it was a UFO. That’s magic.

This is only the third official BMW M5 Touring, and the simple fact that it finally and for the first time ever graces our Canadian soil is nothing short of an automotive miracle. A miracle, mind you, that BMW Canada may wish to repeat once the M3 is up for revision, what with the M3 Touring being available elsewhere on the planet.

Why should BMW reconsider sentencing wagons to death in North America? Simple: Roughly one out of every two new M5s sold is a wagon. I’m thinking a future 3 Series estate coupled with an M3 Touring should be next. Before long, BMW will take over the car business…

It’s a wagon after all

Physically, like all wagons, the M5 Touring is perfection. Truth is, I think it’s better sorted visually than the RS 6 Avant and the Taycan Cross and Sport Turismo. This is reason alone to get one. But, it’s also about functionality.

BMW has nailed the cabin ergonomics. The 12.3-inch instrument panel and 14.9-inch touchscreen are responsive and logically laid out. Drive mode toggles and M1/M2 settings are right at your fingertips, literally. Visibility is decent thanks to standard parking sensors, surround view cameras, and good mirror coverage, although the thick D-pillars limit rearward visibility slightly. In one of these, drivers never look back anyhow.

Wide door openings make getting in and out of the M5 Touring simple, front or rear. The driving position is low and inviting without being impractical. A power liftgate mean loading up after a Costco run is easy enough though on-special TP purchases will need to be kept to a minimum as the boot only holds 500L of stuff.

The rear seat in the M5 Touring is generously appointed, with those same Kyalami Orange leather seats, decent legroom, and available rear sunshades ($500). The rear seats are also heated, and materials are consistent with the front. No third row, of course, but that’s typical in this segment nowadays, sadly.

It’s an M5 after all

This is where the 2025 BMW M5 Touring struts its stuff. Under the hood: a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 and 194-hp electric motor for a combined 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed automatic is violent when provoked and buttery when cruising. A 0–100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds puts it neck-and-neck with the RS6, despite tipping the scales at more than 500 lbs more.

The 14.8-kWh battery gives you up to 40 km of EV range, which is ideal for early-morning departures or urban driving, if you can resist the urge to stop on it. Steering is tactile and precise. Coupled with rear-wheel steering system and M differential, the M5 Touring is always sharp, responsive, and ready for more.

The optional carbon ceramic brakes are fade-free and impossibly strong. The constant warm ambient temperatures kept them at the ready for serious speed-scrubbing after an urge would hit.

The 2025 BMW M5 Touring may wear an M badge, but the ride is impressively well sorted. Adaptive M suspension in “comfort” mode soaks up imperfect roads with poise. You won’t float, but you also won’t cringe at every pothole. I’m rarely one to launch press cars for the simple reason that, if things can go wrong, they usually will. As such, for all my driving, the M5 Touring behaved brilliantly in daily driving situations.

Overall, the M5’s ride quality is firm but never punishing. This car is absurdly competent and addictive.

What to Watch For

At the time of writing, the 2025 BMW M5 Touring is a new model with no known recalls listed on Transport Canada’s database. Due to its exclusivity and complexity, expect high maintenance costs over time. Being a plug-in hybrid, servicing will require specialized technicians. Production is likely limited, meaning resale value could be strong, especially among enthusiasts and collectors.

Pricing for 2025 BMW M5 Touring

Base MSRP in Canada: $138,000
Our as-tested model: $157,400
Key options included: M Carbon ceramic brakes, exclusive Anglesey green paint, rear sunshades, ADAS package, and optional wheels.

Compared to the Audi RS6 Avant ($151,840 base), the M5 Touring is very competitive, especially considering the extra power and plug-in hybrid tech. It’s only $3,000 more than the M5 sedan, making the Touring the better buy for anyone who wants exclusivity and added practicality.

Conclusion

The 2025 BMW M5 Touring is everything at once: practical and bonkers, refined and rowdy, electric and old-school. It might just be the ultimate all-around vehicle for those who want it all… and can afford it. If you love wagons, you already know: this one’s special.
