Many automakers are exploring ways to make wireless charging for electric vehicles a reality and Volkswagen group, via Porsche, is the latest to join this group.
The Volkswagen technology unit in the US, Innovation Hub Knoxville, is working on improving wireless charging capabilities, which could reach 300 kW soon, according to the company.
Since the fastest wired charger compatible with the Porsche Taycan, the test vehicle used to develop this technology, can reach 350 kW, wireless charging will soon be just as fast as traditional charging stations.
Porsche’s goals with this charging method are to reduce the charging time down to only 10 minutes to go from 0 to 80%, which is 12 minutes quicker that what is currently possible for the Taycan.
Wireless charging for an EV works in a very similar way as it does for phone. Instead of using wires, the electricity moves via electromagnetic waves.
Porsche hasn’t specified exactly how this system will be used in their cars, but it should be activated by parking over a charging pad, the same way it is with other manufacturers, namely Genesis, who is expected to beat the others to market with this technology when the GV60 arrives.
In addition to add a new level of convenience by allowing owners to park and not worry about plugging their car in, wireless charging is an important step in the development of autonomous EVs, since they still have to rely on human intervention to plug them in when their battery is depleted. Wireless charging would allow them to be entirely self-sufficient.
