The 2025 MINI Cooper introduces the fourth generation of the hatchback since its return to the market by parent company BMW in 2001. It’s offered in three-door, five-door and convertible configurations, with gasoline engines and an eventual fully electric powertrain to come later.
2025 MINI Cooper Changes and Updates
The Cooper gets a redesign for the 2025 model year, with a new exterior design that’s modern yet unmistakably MINI, in addition to an overhauled cabin and powertrain revisions.
According to BMW, the new Cooper represents “the most significant transformation for MINI since its founding 65 years ago—a transformation that will see the introduction of a completely new MINI Family of vehicles over the course of the year.” The car’s body is slightly longer, wider and higher.
The previous-generation’s base turbo three-cylinder engine is gone, as a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four is available across the board, with varying tunes and output levels.
As before, the MINI offers several paint colours and interior finishes to choose from, including the Multitone Roof with a three-color gradient. The redesigned interior includes a new dashboard, a new steering wheel, new materials and a more modern infotainment system presented on a circular, 9.4-inch central touchscreen. A new ambient lighting system projects graphics through the dashtop in addition to illuminating various other parts of the cockpit.
Last but not least, the Cooper gets a bunch of advanced driving assistance systems, items the previous generation lacked.
2025 MINI Cooper Trim Levels and Pricing
The Cooper 3-Door and Cooper Convertible are available in C, S and John Cooper Works trim levels, while the Cooper 5-Door gets C and S trims only. Customers then choose between the Premier and Premier+ lines with varying equipment levels, and then between the Classic and Flavoured style lines before selecting colors and options.
The Cooper C variants are equipped with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that develops 161 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, sent to the front wheels by a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission. The Cooper S variants also benefit from a turbo 2.0L engine, which generates 201 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The John Cooper Works variants’ engine is massaged to pump out 228 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

2025 MINI Cooper Warranty Coverage
In Canada, the MINI Cooper is backed by a 4-year/80,000 km limited warranty (whichever comes first), and a 12-year rust perforation warranty. The car includes no-charge scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 40,000 km, covering routine service touching vehicle inspection, engine oil, engine air filter, brake fluid and cabin air filter.
In addition, 24-hour roadside assistance is offered on the MINI Cooper for 4 years or 80,000 km.
What the 2025 MINI Cooper Does Well
- Aside from the Volkswagen Golf GTI/R, there’s nothing like it left on the North American market. That in itself is a purchase consideration.
- As always, the MINI Cooper is fun to drive and one of the best-handling small cars around, despite having putting on some weight. It puts a smile on our faces each time we get behind the wheel. Fuel economy is among the lowest in the segment, although premium fuel must be chosen.
- The base Cooper makes a better case for itself. We didn’t dislike the previous generation’s three-banger engine, but the new 2.0L four is more refined, more powerful and just as efficient. It’s a win in all cases.
- The MINI gets a modern interior with a huge central display screen, better craftsmanship, richer materials and many new safety features. The outgoing generation was seriously lacking regarding the latter.
What the 2025 MINI Cooper Doesn’t Do Well
- The new Cooper’s price has increased by a few thousand dollars. It’s a reasonable hike given the longer list of standard features, but it’s still a quite a bit of dough for a small car with admittedly limited practicality.
- Despite some slight gains in exterior dimensions, the cabin isn’t any roomier than before. That said, adults can actually fit in the rear-seat area if front-seat occupants are willing to move their seat cushions forward. Cargo space isn’t very generous, so shopping sprees must be planned out accordingly.
- The round infotainment screen may not seem big at 9.4 inches in diameter, but in a car this small, it’s huge. There’s no driver instrument cluster and that’s why head-up display is standard. Having this giant OLED pie in our face, especially when the sun goes down, is a little disconcerting. The system’s processing speed isn’t great, the main controls are placed in four sections with little button zones, and the system works with driver profiles, so setup time is required. Some menus weren’t accessible when a profile was loaded (instead of the guest profile), which challenges its user-friendliness. We’re assuming once owners get everything set up, it’s better.
- We’re nitpicking here, but there are bunch of little things that bug us, such as the center console storage box that isn’t all that spacious and can’t be removed, the gimmicky drive modes or “experiences,” the non-adjustable front center armrest, the odd lack of paddle shifters and the door panel material that chafes our sensitive elbows.
