Volkswagen of the Netherlands published short videos of the upcoming Volkswagen I.D. long enough for us to get a good glimpse of VW’s upcoming EV. The VW ID.3 will be available for order this week, but don’t expect to see a production version until the Frankfurt Auto Show in the fall.
We learned last week that different versions of the Volkswagen ID.3 will be available. It will apparently start at around 30,000 Euros with 330 kilometers of range and a 48 kWh battery. Next will be a 62-kWh battery with 450 kilometers of range, and then the top-of-the-line 80-kWh battery with 550 kilometers of range. These numbers are all based on the WLTP standard, which means you have to take about 20 percent off to get North American range numbers.
In any case the new Volkswagen I.D.’s base model will likely compete with the Nissan LEAF while the versions with a 62-kWh battery will do battle with the likes of the Nissan LEAF Plus and Chevrolet Bolt. The top-of-the-line VW ID will have the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Kona EV in its sights. We don’t have pricing info yet for North America.
Volkswagen is about to go on the offensive with the ID lineup. Upcoming models will go from ID.1 to ID.9 with the model we’re talking about here being the ID.3. Other VW ID models coming include a three-row all-electric crossover, and possible a fully-electric cargo van.
