Bill Murray + Jeep Gladiator = Best Groundhog Day Ever

This might be the best Super Bowl commercial this year: Bill Murray, a groundhog and a new Jeep Gladiator.

  • Yes, that Bill Murray and yes, in a groundhog day commercial.
  • This is Bill’s first ever commercial.
  • The other stars are a groundhog and a new 2020 Jeep Gladiator.

To get Bill Murray to do a commercial, as this is his first ever, is quite an accomplishment. And that he’s agreed to do one with Jeep tells us that FCA’s SUV and truck division and Bill share a passion for having fun. In this instance, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is the perfect candidate for snow-hooning fun.

For this year’s Super Bowl LIV mega event, Bill Murray reprises his role as Phil the reporter stuck in a never-ending loop that happens to be reliving groundhog day over and over. The movie launched in 1993 but everyone remembers this one. This is what Jeep reps are hoping will be this commercial’s residual effect: people will remember the Jeep Gladiator.

Sales of the Gladiator have slowed a bit at the end of 2019 and although this is arguably the best Super Bowl LIV commercial, we doubt it’ll have a direct impact on deliveries. Now, we LOVE the new Jeep Wrangler and each and every version but to be quite honest, we’re more in the mood for a Bill Murray movie binge. Anyone else?

Here’s a fun stat: The Big Game and Groundhog Day fall on the same day for only the second time in the Super Bowl’s 54-year history.
