In October 2018, during the Paris Auto Show press days, then CEO Harald Krüger confirmed the arrival of the BMW i4. The i4 was the latest upcoming model in BMW’s gradually evolving EV lineup.
So, after the MINI EV that was launched a few weeks ago, the iX3 that’s coming next year, the iNext that’s launching in 2021 and of course the aforementioned i4, also arriving in 2021, the German manufacturer is working on an i7.
According to BMWBLOG, BMW will offer for the first time ever a 100% electric 7 Series model. This model, which is codenamed the BMW i7 will be offered on the upcoming next-generation of the luxury sedan.
The i7 will be built on the fifth-generation drive system, which is able to accommodate both ICE and EV powertrains.
Still according to BMWBLOG, the fully electric sedan will be offered in three different battery packs. The base model will get the same 80kWh battery pack as the i4 while the top model will “go higher than 120 kWh”.
As for the range, since the BMW i7 would share some battery packs with the i4 we could assume something along 550 to 700 kilometres as previously stated by CEO Harald Krüger during a March 2018 press conference.
“With the fifth generation of eDrive, our vehicles will be able to drive 550 to 700 kilometres on electric power, depending on the model. We will achieve this in the BMW i4 and the iNEXT,” said Krüger during the 2018 Annual Accounts Press Conference.
That being said, the output of the top model could reach 650 hp if not more. The next-generation G70 7 Series is set to be launched in late 2021 or early 2022.
