Reports Suggest 2020 Hyundai Sonata Will Get AWD

All-wheel drive is all the rage right now, and the new Hyundai Sonata might be the latest unexpected model to get it.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata will be an important model to watch this year as the mid-size sedan segment is heating up. A new Nissan Altima has hit the market and the 2020 Subaru Legacy is getting some updates.

These three models will join the redesigned Toyota Camry and Honda Accord to form a segment packed with up-to-date offerings for consumers in need of a mid-size sedan. To compete, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata will need to make an impression to stand out against a tough crowd, and one way it may do that is to add all-wheel drive.

CNET participated in a press briefing in South Korea this week where the question of a Sonata AWD came up. Jae Young Kim, Hyundai’s director of the product division, said Hyundai was currently exploring the possibility of adding all-wheel drive to its redesigned Sonata.

That may not be much to go on, granted, but it wasn’t a definitive “no”. At this point in the design process, Hyundai would be able to confirm if all-wheel drive wasn’t a possibility, and the fact that they are still thinking about means there’s a good chance it could happen. That’s our take, anyway.

All-wheel drive is the big thing right. Cars like the Mazda3 which we didn’t expect to ever offer it are getting it, and the Nissan Altima has shown that there is interest in AWD from mid-size sedan consumers.

Pairing a 2020 Sonata with all-wheel drive to sportier versions like the Turbo would give the redesigned Hyundai sedan quite a few weapons to compete. Stay tuned.
