Suzuki, a brand that once had a presence on North American roads with models like the Vitara and XL7, departed from the continent’s automotive market in 2012. With the unveiling of the e VITARA—its first mass-production battery electric vehicle—we’re wondering if this vehicle could aid in Suzuki’s comeback. Introduced in Milan, Italy, this new model echoes some rugged appeal that previously attracted North American drivers.
The e VITARA signifies a decisive moment for Suzuki as it steps into the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market. Production is scheduled to commence at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India in the spring of 2025. The company plans to initiate sales in Europe, India, and Japan by the summer of the same year, indicating Suzuki’s global strategy for the e VITARA.
Based on the eVX concept model showcased earlier in 2023 at events like the Auto Expo in India and the Japan Mobility Show, the e VITARA transitions from concept to production. The e VITARA embodies the “High-Tech & Adventure” design theme. With large-diameter tires and a long wheelbase, the e VITARA is commanding on the road. Its exterior design conveys both strength and modernity. Inside, the e VITARA features integrated advanced display systems, robust panels, and a rugged centre console. à
At the heart of the e VITARA is the efficient eAxle, which integrates the motor and inverter. Paired with lithium-iron-phosphate batteries designed for safety and reliability, the vehicle promises nimble acceleration and responsive performance, whether starting from a standstill or overtaking at higher speeds.
The e VITARA features the ALLGRIP-e electric four-wheel-drive system, utilizing two independent eAxles at the front and rear. This setup enhances off-road capabilities and provides powerful performance. The Trail mode includes an LSD function, allowing for smooth navigation over challenging terrains by distributing torque to the wheels with the most grip.
Built on the newly developed HEARTECT-e platform specifically for electric vehicles, the e VITARA boasts a lightweight structure with high-voltage protection. The design offers a spacious interior due to short overhangs and maximized battery capacity.
Looking ahead, Suzuki intends to expand its electric vehicle lineup and provide mobility solutions suited to different countries and regions—perhaps North America.
Suzuki has a legacy in North America, with models like the, Swift, Vitara, Grand Vitara, Sidekick, and XL7 once offered in Canada and the United States before the company’s departure in 2012. The e VITARA could be an ideal model for Suzuki to re-enter the North American market, especially given the growing demand for electric SUVs. Additionally, the rugged and compact Suzuki Jimny might find a receptive audience, appealing to consumers seeking versatile and adventurous vehicles.
If there were a time to think about Suzuki’s return, it would be now. Having said all of this, it seems highly unlikely they’ll ever return. That is unless Toyota deems the investment worthy.
